Yamaha RS 100 Performance Review.

Introduction:

This edition of the Yamaha RS 100 Single is the 5 speed | Manual version and was first brought out in 1976. This was at around the same time as the introduction of the 1976 Suzuki GT 250 M and the 1976 Kawasaki Z 900 LTD.This particular Yamaha RS 100 has a 97cc Air cooled, Four stroke, Wankel Petrol powerplant with 1 cylinders and Carburettor.

Suzuki GS 500 E - [1989] image

An alternative Wankel engine, Standard style motorbike includes the Suzuki GS 500 E - [1989]

The 1976 RS 100 shares its Wankel engine and Standard style configuration with the likes of the 1989 Suzuki GS 500 E and the 1966 Norton Dunstall 750. Alternatively, if you're looking for other bikes which share the RS 100's Standard style with a similar size of engine then how about the 1967 Suzuki T 125 Two Stroke | 1967cc.1986 Kawasaki AR 125 Single Cylinder | 1986cc.

Power and Torque:

Weighing in at 0 kgs (0 lbs) this makes the Yamaha RS 100 Single in the same weight category as the 2024 Honda CBR 650 R or the 2024 Kawasaki Z7 Hybrid, give or take 50kg.

Honda MSX 125 Grom - [2025] image

The 1976 Yamaha RS 100 shares the same bhp with the Honda MSX 125 Grom - [2025]

In terms of power the 97cc 5 valve Wankel 1 cylinder engine produces 11 bhp (8 kW) @ 8500 rpm similar to the 2025 Honda MSX 125 Grom [9.6 bhp (7 kW) @ 7250 rpm] or the 2024 Honda SL 99 I [29 bhp (21 kW) @ 7500 rpm].

The Reed Valve Four stroke unit throws out torque of 7.4 lb-ft (10.1 Nm) @ 7000 rpm placing it alongside motorbikes of similar performance figures such as the 2025 Honda MSX 125 Grom [7.6 lb-ft (10.4 Nm) @ 5500 rpm] and the 2024 Kawasaki Z7 Hybrid [32.0 lb-ft (43.5 Nm) @ 7500 rpm].

Power to Weight:

If one combines the weight with power or torque performance for the Yamaha RS 100 you can get a better idea of it's real world performance.

Suzuki GP 125 Single Cylinder - [1978] image

The 1978 Suzuki GP 125 Single Cylinder has similar Bhp Per Ton stats as the 1976 Yamaha RS 100 Single.

The 1976 Yamaha RS 100 Single has a Power to weight ratio of 99.0 bhp per ton and 67.1 lb-ft per ton. Bhp Per Ton figures of the 1976 RS 100 competing with the 1978 Suzuki GP 125 Single Cylinder [123.9 bhp\ton] and the 2021 Honda CBR 150 R Repsol MotoGP Edition [123.3 bhp\ton].

Power to Weight(cont.):

If you agree with the late great Carroll Shelby, then arguably an even better indicator of potential performance is Torque. Factor weight into the equation and you end up with - Torque per ton, with the Yamaha RS 100 generating around 67.1 lb-ft per ton. If you're curious as to what other motorbikes have as much torque to weight then look no further than the 1992 Yamaha TZR 125 R Naked [92.1 lb-ft per ton] and the 1992 Yamaha TZR 125 SP Belgarda [92.1 lb-ft per ton].

Acceleration:

With a 0-60mph time of 37.3 secs or a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 38.1 secs, this makes the Yamaha RS 100 Single similar in acceleration to the 2018 Honda CBR 125 R (37.3 secs) and the 2016 Honda CBR 125 R Repsol (37.3 secs). This Yamaha RS 100 Single also competes in terms of 0-60 mph and 0-100km/h with the 2018 Honda CB 250 R Neo Sports Cafe (0.0 secs) and the 2020 Norton Superlight SS (0.4 secs).

Kawasaki KMX 125 Single Cylinder - [2002] image
