Yamaha FJ-09 Performance Review.

Introduction:

This edition of the Yamaha FJ-09 850 is the 6 speed | Manual version and was first brought out in 2015. This was at around the same time as the introduction of the 2016 Yamaha XSR 700 Twin and the 2015 Honda AF24 Giorno. This particular Yamaha FJ-09 has a 847cc Liquid cooled, Two stroke, V4 Petrol powerplant with 3 cylinders and Electronic Fuel Injection.

Kawasaki Ninja H2 1000 SX-SE Supercharged - [2020] image

An alternative V4 engine, Sport-Touring style motorbike includes the Kawasaki Ninja H2 1000 SX-SE Supercharged - [2020]

The 2015 FJ-09 shares its V4 engine and Sport-Touring style configuration with the likes of the 2020 Kawasaki Ninja H2 1000 SX-SE Supercharged and the 2019 Kawasaki Ninja H2 1000 SX-SE Supercharged. Alternatively, if you're looking for other bikes which share the FJ-09's Sport-Touring style with a similar size of engine then how about the 2005 Kawasaki Z 750 S | 2005cc.1995 Suzuki RF 600 R | 1995cc.

Power and Torque:

Weighing in at 207 kgs (456 lbs) this makes the Yamaha FJ-09 850 in the same weight category as the 2025 Kawasaki Z 900 DOHC SE or the 2025 Suzuki SV 650 ABS, give or take 50kg.

Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ - [2025] image

The 2015 Yamaha FJ-09 shares the same bhp with the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ - [2025]

In terms of power the 847cc 9 valve V4 3 cylinder engine produces 114 bhp (85 kW) @ 10000 rpm similar to the 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ [119 bhp (88 kW) @ 10000 rpm] or the 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT [119 bhp (88 kW) @ 10000 rpm].

The DOHC Two stroke unit throws out torque of 64.5 lb-ft (87.5 Nm) @ 8500 rpm placing it alongside motorbikes of similar performance figures such as the 2025 Suzuki SV 650 ABS [47.2 lb-ft (63.9 Nm) @ 8100 rpm] and the 2025 Kawasaki Z 900 DOHC [73.0 lb-ft (99.1 Nm) @ 7700 rpm].

Power to Weight:

If one combines the weight with power or torque performance for the Yamaha FJ-09 you can get a better idea of it's real world performance.

Kawasaki Z 1000 DOHC - [2005] image

The 2005 Kawasaki Z 1000 DOHC has similar Bhp Per Ton stats as the 2015 Yamaha FJ-09 850.

The 2015 Yamaha FJ-09 850 has a Power to weight ratio of 550.7 bhp per ton and 311.7 lb-ft per ton. Bhp Per Ton figures of the 2015 FJ-09 competing with the 2005 Kawasaki Z 1000 DOHC [574.6 bhp\ton] and the 2009 Kawasaki Z 1000 DOHC [574.6 bhp\ton].

Power to Weight(cont.):

If you agree with the late great Carroll Shelby, then arguably an even better indicator of potential performance is Torque. Factor weight into the equation and you end up with - Torque per ton, with the Yamaha FJ-09 generating around 311.7 lb-ft per ton. If you're curious as to what other motorbikes have as much torque to weight then look no further than the 2005 Norton Commando 961 SS [336.5 lb-ft per ton] and the 1998 Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade [336.2 lb-ft per ton].

Acceleration:

With a 0-60mph time of 6.7 secs or a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 6.9 secs, this makes the Yamaha FJ-09 850 similar in acceleration to the 2023 Yamaha Tracer 9 Triple (6.7 secs) and the 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 Triple (6.7 secs). This Yamaha FJ-09 850 also competes in terms of 0-60 mph and 0-100km/h with the 2018 Honda CB 250 R Neo Sports Cafe (0.0 secs) and the 2020 Norton Superlight SS (0.4 secs).
