Suzuki DR-Z 400 Performance Review.

Introduction:

This edition of the Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM is the 5 speed | Manual version and was first brought out in 2015. This was at around the same time as the introduction of the 2016 Yamaha XSR 700 Twin and the 2015 Honda AF24 Giorno. This particular Suzuki DR-Z 400 has a 398cc Liquid cooled, Two stroke, V8 Petrol powerplant with 1 cylinders and Carburettor.

Norton C 652 SM International - [1999] image

An alternative V8 engine, Supermoto style motorbike includes the Norton C 652 SM International - [1999]

The 2015 DR-Z 400 shares its V8 engine and Supermoto style configuration with the likes of the 1999 Norton C 652 SM International and the 2014 Yamaha XT 660 X. Alternatively, if you're looking for other bikes which share the DR-Z 400's Supermoto style with a similar size of engine then how about the 2006 Honda XR 250 Motard | 2006cc.2003 Honda XR 250 Motard | 2003cc.

Power and Torque:

Weighing in at 146 kgs (321 lbs) this makes the Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM in the same weight category as the 2025 Yamaha YZF-R9 Triple or the 2025 Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT, give or take 50kg.

Yamaha WR 250 F - [2025] image

The 2015 Suzuki DR-Z 400 shares the same bhp with the Yamaha WR 250 F - [2025]

In terms of power the 398cc 4 valve V8 1 cylinder engine produces 39.7 bhp (29 kW) @ 8500 rpm similar to the 2025 Yamaha WR 250 F [36.1 bhp (26 kW) @ 12000 rpm] or the 2025 Honda X-ADV 745 [57.8 bhp (43 kW) @ 6750 rpm].

The DOHC Two stroke unit throws out torque of 28.7 lb-ft (39.0 Nm) @ 6600 rpm placing it alongside motorbikes of similar performance figures such as the 2025 Honda X-ADV 745 [50.9 lb-ft (69.0 Nm) @ 4750 rpm] and the 2025 Honda MSX 125 Grom [7.6 lb-ft (10.4 Nm) @ 5500 rpm].

Power to Weight:

If one combines the weight with power or torque performance for the Suzuki DR-Z 400 you can get a better idea of it's real world performance.

Kawasaki Z 1000 Z1-Classic - [1979] image

The 1979 Kawasaki Z 1000 Z1-Classic has similar Bhp Per Ton stats as the 2015 Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM.

The 2015 Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM has a Power to weight ratio of 271.9 bhp per ton and 197.2 lb-ft per ton. Bhp Per Ton figures of the 2015 DR-Z 400 competing with the 1979 Kawasaki Z 1000 Z1-Classic [296.8 bhp\ton] and the 1970 Honda CB 750 Four K1 [296.4 bhp\ton].

Power to Weight(cont.):

If you agree with the late great Carroll Shelby, then arguably an even better indicator of potential performance is Torque. Factor weight into the equation and you end up with - Torque per ton, with the Suzuki DR-Z 400 generating around 197.2 lb-ft per ton. If you're curious as to what other motorbikes have as much torque to weight then look no further than the 1970 Yamaha RT-1 360 [222.2 lb-ft per ton] and the 1998 Honda VT 1100 C3 Shadow Aero [222.2 lb-ft per ton].

Acceleration:

With a 0-60mph time of 13.6 secs or a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 13.9 secs, this makes the Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM similar in acceleration to the 2019 Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM (13.6 secs) and the 2017 Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM (13.6 secs). This Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM also competes in terms of 0-60 mph and 0-100km/h with the 2018 Honda CB 250 R Neo Sports Cafe (0.0 secs) and the 2020 Norton Superlight SS (0.4 secs).
