Suzuki DR 800 Performance Review.

Introduction:

This edition of the Suzuki DR 800 S Big is the 5 speed / Manual version and was first brought out in 1992. This was at around the same time as the introduction of the 1993 Suzuki RGV 250 SP and the 1993 Suzuki RGV 250 V-Twin.This particular Suzuki DR 800 has a 779cc Air - Liquid cooled, Two stroke, V-Twin Petrol powerplant with 1 cylinders and Carburettor.

Kawasaki KLX 250 Camo - [2020] image

An alternative V-Twin engine, Off-Road style motorbike includes the Kawasaki KLX 250 Camo - [2020]

The 1992 DR 800 shares its V-Twin engine and Off-Road style configuration with the likes of the 2020 Kawasaki KLX 250 Camo and the 2020 Kawasaki KLX 230 Single Cylinder. Alternatively, if you're looking for other bikes which share the DR 800's Off-Road style with a similar size of engine then how about the 2019 Yamaha XSR 700 XTribute | 2019cc.2019 Norton Atlas 650 Nomad | 2019cc.

Power and Torque:

Weighing in at 209 kgs (460 lbs) this makes the Suzuki DR 800 S Big in the same weight category as the 2025 Honda X-ADV 745 or the 2025 Kawasaki Z 900 DOHC SE, give or take 50kg.

Yamaha MT-07 Twin Cylinder - [2025] image

The 1992 Suzuki DR 800 shares the same bhp with the Yamaha MT-07 Twin Cylinder - [2025]

In terms of power the 779cc 4 valve V-Twin 1 cylinder engine produces 52.5 bhp (39 kW) @ 7000 rpm similar to the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 Twin Cylinder [73.4 bhp (54 kW) @ 8750 rpm] or the 2025 Yamaha WR 250 F [36.1 bhp (26 kW) @ 12000 rpm].

The SOHC Two stroke unit throws out torque of 43.4 lb-ft (58.8 Nm) @ 5500 rpm placing it alongside motorbikes of similar performance figures such as the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 Twin Cylinder [50.0 lb-ft (67.7 Nm) @ 6500 rpm] and the 2025 Yamaha Ténéré 700 Rally [50.2 lb-ft (68.0 Nm) @ 6500 rpm].

Power to Weight:

If one combines the weight with power or torque performance for the Suzuki DR 800 you can get a better idea of it's real world performance.

Kawasaki Z 550 GP - [1981] image

The 1981 Kawasaki Z 550 GP has similar Bhp Per Ton stats as the 1992 Suzuki DR 800 S Big.

The 1992 Suzuki DR 800 S Big has a Power to weight ratio of 251.1 bhp per ton and 207.6 lb-ft per ton. Bhp Per Ton figures of the 1992 DR 800 competing with the 1981 Kawasaki Z 550 GP [276.1 bhp\ton] and the 1981 Kawasaki Z 550 GP [276.1 bhp\ton].

Power to Weight(cont.):

If you agree with the late great Carroll Shelby, then arguably an even better indicator of potential performance is Torque. Factor weight into the equation and you end up with - Torque per ton, with the Suzuki DR 800 generating around 207.6 lb-ft per ton. If you're curious as to what other motorbikes have as much torque to weight then look no further than the 1993 Yamaha FZR 600 DOHC [232.6 lb-ft per ton] and the 1989 Yamaha FZR 600 DOHC [232.6 lb-ft per ton].

Acceleration:

With a 0-60mph time of 14.7 secs or a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 15.0 secs, this makes the Suzuki DR 800 S Big similar in acceleration to the 1993 Suzuki Across DOHC (14.7 secs) and the 1993 Honda NT 650 V Revere (14.7 secs). This Suzuki DR 800 S Big also competes in terms of 0-60 mph and 0-100km/h with the 2018 Honda CB 250 R Neo Sports Cafe (0.0 secs) and the 2020 Norton Superlight SS (0.4 secs).

Kawasaki Z 650 DOHC - [1980] image

Honda CHF 50 Metropolitan - [2013] image

Top Speed of the 1992 DR 800 equals the 2013 Honda CHF 50 Metropolitan

If maxing out your bike on the AutoBahn is your thing and you're wondering what's faster at the top end than the 1992 Suzuki DR 800 S Big then how about a 2013 Honda CHF 50 Metropolitan (35 mph) and the 2002 Honda CHF 50 Metropolitan (35 mph).
