Suzuki DL 1000 Performance Review.

Introduction:

This edition of the Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring is the 6 speed | Manual version and was first brought out in 2009. This was at around the same time as the introduction of the 2010 Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade C-ABS TT Tribute and the 2010 Kawasaki ZX-10 R Ninja Performance Edition. This particular Suzuki DL 1000 has a 996cc Liquid cooled, Two stroke, V3 Petrol powerplant with 2 cylinders and Electronic Fuel Injection.

Honda X Eleven Four Stroke - [1999] image

An alternative V3 engine, Adventure style motorbike includes the Honda X Eleven Four Stroke - [1999]

The 2009 DL 1000 shares its V3 engine and Adventure style configuration with the likes of the 1999 Honda X Eleven Four Stroke and the 2010 Buell-EBR XB12X Ulysses Adventure. Alternatively, if you're looking for other bikes which share the DL 1000's Adventure style with a similar size of engine then how about the 2006 Kawasaki KLV 1000 V-Twin | 2006cc.2005 Kawasaki KLV 1000 V-Twin | 2005cc.

Power and Torque:

Weighing in at 236 kgs (520 lbs) this makes the Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring in the same weight category as the 2025 Kawasaki Z 900 DOHC SE or the 2025 Honda X-ADV 745, give or take 50kg.

Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ - [2025] image

The 2009 Suzuki DL 1000 shares the same bhp with the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ - [2025]

In terms of power the 996cc 8 valve V3 2 cylinder engine produces 98 bhp (73 kW) @ 7400 rpm similar to the 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ [119 bhp (88 kW) @ 10000 rpm] or the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 Twin Cylinder [73.4 bhp (54 kW) @ 8750 rpm].

The DOHC Two stroke unit throws out torque of 74.5 lb-ft (101.0 Nm) @ 6400 rpm placing it alongside motorbikes of similar performance figures such as the 2025 Kawasaki Z 900 DOHC [73.0 lb-ft (99.1 Nm) @ 7700 rpm] and the 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT [68.5 lb-ft (93.0 Nm) @ 7000 rpm].

Power to Weight:

If one combines the weight with power or torque performance for the Suzuki DL 1000 you can get a better idea of it's real world performance.

Honda CBF 1000 FA - [2011] image

The 2011 Honda CBF 1000 FA has similar Bhp Per Ton stats as the 2009 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring.

The 2009 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring has a Power to weight ratio of 415.2 bhp per ton and 315.6 lb-ft per ton. Bhp Per Ton figures of the 2009 DL 1000 competing with the 2011 Honda CBF 1000 FA [439.8 bhp\ton] and the 1997 Kawasaki ZRX 1100 DOHC [439.8 bhp\ton].

Power to Weight(cont.):

If you agree with the late great Carroll Shelby, then arguably an even better indicator of potential performance is Torque. Factor weight into the equation and you end up with - Torque per ton, with the Suzuki DL 1000 generating around 315.6 lb-ft per ton. If you're curious as to what other motorbikes have as much torque to weight then look no further than the 2001 Yamaha FJR 1300 [340.5 lb-ft per ton] and the 2005 Yamaha FJR 1300 ABS [340.5 lb-ft per ton].

Acceleration:

With a 0-60mph time of 8.9 secs or a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 9.1 secs, this makes the Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring similar in acceleration to the 2014 Honda VFR 800 X Crossrunner (8.9 secs) and the 2012 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom (8.9 secs). This Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring also competes in terms of 0-60 mph and 0-100km/h with the 2018 Honda CB 250 R Neo Sports Cafe (0.0 secs) and the 2020 Norton Superlight SS (0.4 secs).

Buell-EBR XB12S Lightning - [2007] image

Quarter Mile time is a close race between the 2009 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring and the 2007 Buell-EBR XB12S Lightning

When talking about the performance of the 2009 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring on the drag strip it can reach a quarter mile in an estimated 12.2 secs @ 112 mph. Bikes with a similar performance down the quarter mile can be found in the 2007 Buell-EBR XB12S Lightning (12.2 secs) and the 1998 Suzuki GSX 600 F Katana (12.2 secs).

Top Speed:

The 2009 version of the Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring has a maximum speed of 129mph.

Honda GL 1800 Gold Wing Tour Auto - [2024] image

Top Speed of the 2009 DL 1000 equals the 2024 Honda GL 1800 Gold Wing Tour Auto

If maxing out your bike on the AutoBahn is your thing and you're wondering what's faster at the top end than the 2009 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Grand Touring then how about a 2024 Honda GL 1800 Gold Wing Tour Auto (140 mph) and the 2024 Honda GL 1800 Gold Wing Tour (140 mph).
