Honda CM 125 Performance Review.

Introduction:

This edition of the Honda CM 125 T is the 6 speed / Manual version and was first brought out in 1974. This was at around the same time as the introduction of the 1975 Suzuki GT 250 M and the 1975 Kawasaki H2 750 Mach IV.This particular Honda CM 125 has a 125cc Air cooled, Two stroke, Horizontal In-Line Petrol powerplant with 2 cylinders and Carburettor.

Suzuki GV 700 GL Madura - [1984] image

An alternative Horizontal In-Line engine, Cruiser style motorbike includes the Suzuki GV 700 GL Madura - [1984]

The 1974 CM 125 shares its Horizontal In-Line engine and Cruiser style configuration with the likes of the 1984 Suzuki GV 700 GL Madura and the 1978 Yamaha XS 750 Special. Alternatively, if you're looking for other bikes which share the CM 125's Cruiser style with a similar size of engine then how about the 2018 Suzuki Boulevard - Intruder 150 FI-SP | 2018cc.2018 Suzuki Boulevard - Intruder 150 | 2018cc.

Power and Torque:

Weighing in at 137 kgs (302 lbs) this makes the Honda CM 125 T in the same weight category as the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 Twin Cylinder or the 2025 Yamaha WR 250 F, give or take 50kg.

Honda MSX 125 Grom - [2025] image

The 1974 Honda CM 125 shares the same bhp with the Honda MSX 125 Grom - [2025]

In terms of power the 125cc 4 valve Horizontal In-Line 2 cylinder engine produces 12 bhp (8 kW) @ 7500 rpm similar to the 2025 Honda MSX 125 Grom [9.6 bhp (7 kW) @ 7250 rpm] or the 2025 Yamaha WR 250 F [36.1 bhp (26 kW) @ 12000 rpm].

The SOHC Two stroke unit throws out torque of 6.9 lb-ft (9.3 Nm) @ 7000 rpm placing it alongside motorbikes of similar performance figures such as the 2025 Yamaha WR 250 F [17.8 lb-ft (24.2 Nm) @ 8100 rpm] and the 2024 Kawasaki Eliminator 500 Twin [31.7 lb-ft (42.9 Nm) @ 7500 rpm].

Power to Weight:

If one combines the weight with power or torque performance for the Honda CM 125 you can get a better idea of it's real world performance.

Yamaha DT 125 Two Stroke - [1978] image

The 1978 Yamaha DT 125 Two Stroke has similar Bhp Per Ton stats as the 1974 Honda CM 125 T.

The 1974 Honda CM 125 T has a Power to weight ratio of 87.5 bhp per ton and 50.6 lb-ft per ton. Bhp Per Ton figures of the 1974 CM 125 competing with the 1978 Yamaha DT 125 Two Stroke [112.0 bhp\ton] and the 1977 Yamaha DT 125 Two Stroke [112.0 bhp\ton].

Power to Weight(cont.):

If you agree with the late great Carroll Shelby, then arguably an even better indicator of potential performance is Torque. Factor weight into the equation and you end up with - Torque per ton, with the Honda CM 125 generating around 50.6 lb-ft per ton. If you're curious as to what other motorbikes have as much torque to weight then look no further than the 2021 Honda SH Mode 125 [75.6 lb-ft per ton] and the 1990 Yamaha WR 125 YPVS [75.6 lb-ft per ton].

Acceleration:

With a 0-60mph time of 42.2 secs or a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 43.2 secs, this makes the Honda CM 125 T similar in acceleration to the 1988 Honda TL 125 Single Cylinder (42.2 secs) and the 1986 Honda TL 125 Single Cylinder (42.2 secs). This Honda CM 125 T also competes in terms of 0-60 mph and 0-100km/h with the 2018 Honda CB 250 R Neo Sports Cafe (0.0 secs) and the 2020 Norton Superlight SS (0.4 secs).

Honda CBR 500 R - [2022] image

Yamaha XT 250 Single - [2020] image
